The Iterate Phase

Useful For: Continuous improvement...
When you hit the iterate phase, the solution and project is essentially complete. However, if you're like us, you'll always be thinking about what you could do to make your solutions even better next time.

Iterate helps us pause, reflect, and address anything we could have or want to have done differently.
  • Run an iterate workshop and/or Project retrospective

It's important that once you hit the end of a project and your solution is live, you don't just 'down tools'.

Project retrospectives reflect back on the project as a whole and lessons learnt. What went, well, what didn't go so well, and outlining how you'll factor in these insights and approach your next project differently.

Iterate workshops look at the solution specifically and if you achieved what you set out to do. You'll look at metrics, feedback, and any other quantitative and quantitative data that reveals opportunities to improve your solution in future iterations.

  • check your measures

This sounds obvious, but make sure you check progress against the measures you set out at the beginning of the project. Have they moved? Are they going in the right direction? How much more time do you need to be able to tell you’ve made a difference?

  • delegate

For any remaining outstanding tasks, there may be other members of the project team who can now act as product managers for your solution. Delegate any BAU tasks accordingly and brief those you are handing over to on why the solution exists and the discovery work you've undertaken.

  • Create additional marketing content

One of the best times to create marketing content for your solution is while it's being used. Capture film, photos, interviews and people's reactions to your solution.

  • check in with your audience

In addition to getting stakeholder input on how the project went, check in with your audience groups and see if anything's changed as a result of your solution going live.

You may not always like the answers, so try to be as impartial and open minded as you can when gathering this type of insight. It'll help you get it right in subsequent iterations of the solution.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE…

It's really easy to completely ignore the iterate phase.

When you're done with one solution, it's tempting to move on to the next, but taking the time to look at your solution with fresh eyes and see what's next in its lifecycle helps you be more intentional in your work.
