Creating Consumer-Grade Induction and Onboarding Experiences
Solvd and a leading global professional services firm, collaborated on an innovative and effective approach to onboarding and induction.
The Challenge:
The client wanted to revamp their induction and onboarding experience for new experienced hires across the UK. The existing induction events included 2-hour ‘chalk-and-talk’ Zoom meetings with limited interaction. All the stakeholders felt that it didn’t represent the prestige of the brand, nor did it deliver the outcomes in terms of engagement, belonging, and inclusion

Why the Professional Services client chose Solvd
The client knew they needed a partner with a deep understanding of the organisational culture, and the creative flair, to provide a consumer-grade induction and onboarding experience. We knew the client culture almost better than the client knew themselves having conducted years of high-quality research into leadership, hybrid working, to learning culture, and early-careers.
What Solvd delivered
As usual we started with research to identify the needs of experienced hires, uncovering the challenges of joining the company. We then matched this to the constraints imposed by the client e.g., the induction needed to include a virtual event, and a series of communications before and after.
There were two projects that included slightly different approaches. For one induction and onboarding the inspiration for the design came from F1; namely Martin Brundle’s Grid Walk. The result was a 2-hour virtual induction that felt like a TV-show:
- An opening, high-energy ‘Sting’, that raised the pulse and created impact.
- An office walkthrough with set-piece interviews that felt like the new hires were going to the office for the first time and meeting their colleagues.
- A series of high-profile interviews for example, with the CEO, that welcomed the new hires to the company.
- An interview with a customer about a particular project that helped new hires understand the expectations of them.
- Adverts for other initiatives such as the community networks and joining benefits.
- A gameshow based on a popular format that allowed new hires to test their knowledge against their peers.
For the second induction and onboarding we had more time to play with and so incorporated a 1-day virtual event, and a 1-day simulation. The latter was designed with the client to look and feel like a real but condensed project:
- The new hires were provided with a series of dossiers for each stage of the project life cycle.
- The dossiers also included relevant side-quests.
- The new hires were split into teams and were competing against each other.
- The new hires had to present their thinking and work at each stage for feedback.
In support of the experiences, we designed and delivered a consumer-grade communications campaign. It allowed the client to nudge the new hires towards useful information, future events, and capture feedback data to iterate the journey further.
